What is API gateway?

An API gateway is a service that sits in front of a group of APIs and acts as the single entry point for client requests, routing each one to the right backend. It typically also handles authentication, rate limiting, logging and request transformation in one place.

Why it matters for your business

A gateway gives you one place to secure, monitor and control access to your APIs, which simplifies partner integrations and protects backend systems from overload or misuse.

Example

A logistics company exposes shipment tracking to partners through an API gateway that checks each partner's API key and limits them to 100 requests per minute.
