What is Application programming interface (API)?

An application programming interface, or API, is a defined way for one piece of software to request data or actions from another. It sets out what can be asked for, in what format, and what comes back.

Why it matters for your business

APIs are how modern systems connect. A product with a clean API is easier to integrate with partners, apps and automation, and easier to extend later.

Example

A mobile app calls the company's API to fetch a customer's orders, and the same API powers the website and a partner's dashboard.
