What is GraphQL?

GraphQL is a query language and runtime for APIs that lets the client ask for exactly the data it needs in a single request, using a typed schema that describes what is available. It was created at Facebook and released as open source in 2015.

Why it matters for your business

GraphQL can reduce the number of calls and the amount of data that apps and web front ends download, which helps performance, though it needs more careful design around caching and security.

Example

A mobile app fetches a customer's name, last three orders and loyalty points in one GraphQL query instead of calling three separate REST endpoints.
