What is OAuth?

OAuth is an open standard for authorization that lets a user grant one application limited access to their data in another service without sharing their password. The current version, OAuth 2.0, issues access tokens with specific scopes, and it is often paired with OpenID Connect for sign-in.

Why it matters for your business

OAuth is how most modern integrations connect securely, letting your software access accounts like Google, Microsoft or Shopify with permissions that users can review and revoke.

Example

A scheduling tool asks staff to approve access to their Microsoft 365 calendars through OAuth, so it can book meetings without storing anyone's password.
