What is NoSQL database?

A NoSQL database is a database that stores data in formats other than the fixed tables of a relational database, such as documents, key-value pairs, wide columns or graphs. Many give up strict schemas and complex joins in exchange for flexible data structures and easier scaling across servers.

Why it matters for your business

NoSQL databases suit applications with fast-changing data shapes or very high traffic, such as catalogs, user sessions and activity feeds, while relational databases remain the better fit for most transactional records.

Example

A mobile app stores user profiles and preferences as documents in MongoDB, letting the team add new fields for a feature release without a database schema migration.
