What is SQL?

SQL (Structured Query Language) is the standard language for storing, querying and changing data in relational databases, which organize data into tables of rows and columns. It is used by databases such as Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL and MySQL, and by many analytics and BI tools.

Why it matters for your business

SQL is the common skill and interface behind most business data, so reports, integrations and migrations built on it are easier to maintain and hand over between teams.

Example

An analyst writes a SQL query that joins the orders and customers tables to list the top 20 accounts by revenue this quarter, then schedules it to refresh a weekly report.
