What is Data modeling?

Data modeling is the process of deciding how an organization's data is structured, named and related, usually drawn as tables, fields and the links between them. A good model reflects how the business actually works, so reports, apps and integrations all read the same data the same way.

Why it matters for your business

A clear data model keeps numbers consistent across reports and systems, makes new dashboards faster to build and reduces costly rework when you add data sources or change platforms.

Example

Before building sales reports, an analyst maps how customers, orders, products and regions relate, then defines one shared customer table that both CRM and ERP data feed into.
