What is Chunking?

Chunking is the process of splitting long documents into smaller, meaningful sections before they are converted into embeddings and stored for AI retrieval. Good chunking keeps related sentences together, often with some overlap, so each piece still makes sense when it is retrieved on its own.

Why it matters for your business

How documents are chunked strongly affects whether an AI assistant finds the right passage. Poor chunking leads to incomplete or misleading answers even with a strong model.

Example

An HR assistant splits the employee handbook by section heading rather than fixed character counts, so a question about parental leave retrieves the complete policy.
