What is Web accessibility (WCAG)?

Web accessibility is the practice of building websites and apps that people with disabilities can use, including those who rely on screen readers, keyboard navigation or captions. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), published by the W3C, are the most widely used standard for measuring it.

Why it matters for your business

Accessible sites reach more customers and are often easier for everyone to use. In the US, complaints and lawsuits citing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are common, so many businesses treat WCAG as a baseline.

Example

An audit of an online store finds product images without alt text and a checkout that cannot be completed by keyboard, so both are fixed before the holiday season.
