What is Version control?

Version control is a system that records every change to a set of files over time, so teams can see who changed what, work in parallel on separate branches and restore earlier versions. Git is the most widely used version control system, often hosted on platforms such as GitHub, GitLab or Azure DevOps.

Why it matters for your business

Version control protects your codebase from lost work, makes every change auditable and is the foundation for code reviews and automated deployments.

Example

Two developers build separate features on their own Git branches, then merge them after a code review, with the full history available if a change must be reversed.
