What is User research?

User research is the practice of studying the people who use or will use a product, through interviews, observation, surveys and analytics, to understand their needs, behaviors and pain points. It relies on evidence about real users rather than assumptions made by the team or stakeholders.

Why it matters for your business

Research reduces the risk of building features nobody needs. A few days of interviews can redirect a project before budget is spent on the wrong solution.

Example

Before redesigning a customer portal, a team interviews eight account managers and five customers and finds that most support calls come from one confusing invoice screen.
