What is Feature flag?

A feature flag is a setting in software that turns a feature on or off at runtime without deploying new code. Teams use flags to release features to a small group first, run experiments or switch off a problem quickly, separating code deployment from feature release.

Why it matters for your business

Feature flags reduce release risk, since a faulty feature can be disabled in seconds, and they let business teams decide when customers see new functionality.

Example

An e-commerce team ships a new checkout flow behind a feature flag, turns it on for a small share of shoppers, then expands it after checking error rates.
