What is Dynamics AX?

Dynamics AX, originally Axapta, is Microsoft's older ERP for mid-sized and large organizations and the predecessor of Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. All AX versions are past the end of extended support, including AX 2012 R3, which reached it in January 2023.

Why it matters for your business

Companies still on AX run without Microsoft security updates and with a shrinking pool of support. Moving to Dynamics 365 can follow Microsoft's upgrade path from specific AX 2012 versions or a re-implementation with selected data, so check Microsoft's current requirements early.

Example

A distributor on AX 2012 reviews each customization, rebuilds the few that still matter as X++ extensions and replaces the rest with standard Dynamics 365 features.
